Podcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what?
~Can be soothing to the eye, maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the body

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
~Visible light

Describe white light?
~equal parts of all colors in visible spectrum

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
~The objects absorb or reflect one or more colors in the visible spectrum; the colors reflected are the ones we see

What is a glass prism?
~A transparent triangular object that breaks white light into all the colors of the visible light spectrum

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
~All the colors in the visible light:
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet

Describe hue?
~the color itself; each different hue is a different reflected wavelength

When does white light occur?
~When all the wavelengths are reflected back to your eye

When does black light occur?
~When no light is reflected to your eye

How color is perceived depends on what?
~Type of light it is seen with; incandescent, flourescent or natural sunlight

What is a color wheel?
~A visual tool that shows the relationship between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors

What are primary colors? Name them?
~The colors that make the secondary colors
Red, yellow, and blue

What are secondary colors? Name them?
~Colors made up of the primary colors
Orange, green, violet

What are tertiary colors? Name them?
~Colors made up of one primary color and one secondary color
Red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red violet

What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
~Colors that don't show up on the color wheel at all; colors of very low saturation
~Mixing complementary colors

How can a neutral color help a design?
~Help put the focus on other colors or tone down overpowering colors

What are complementary colors? Name them?
~Colors positioned opposite of each other on the color wheel
Red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet

What is color value?
~Lightness and darkness of a hue or color

What is a shade?
~A low-value color; adding black to a hue

What is a tint?
~A high-value color; adding white to a hue

What is saturation/intensity?
 ~Brightness of a color

What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
~A dull tone

Describe color harmony?
~Helps to create visual interest and sense of order

What is a color scheme?
~Harmonious color combinations; used to create style and appeal; based on color wheel and arrangement of colors

Describe a monochromatic color scheme?
~Uses tints and shades of values of one color; clean and elegant; soothing effect; easy on eyes

Describe an analogous color scheme?
~Uses three colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel; one color is used as a dominant color while the others enrich the scheme; often found in nature; pleasing to the eye; bright and cheery effect; can go along changing moods

Describe a complementary color scheme?
~Uses two colors opposite on the color wheel; will draw a lot of attention; works best in situations where you need high-contrast compositions

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
~Uses 3 colors; 1 color and the 2 adjacent to its complementary; will draw attention but without the tension of complementary scheme

Describe a triadic color scheme?
~Uses three colors equally spaced around the color wheel; offers a strong visual balance

What colors are considered to be warm colors?
~Yellows, oranges, and reds

Describe a warm color scheme?
~Bold and energetic

What colors are considered to be cool colors?
~Greens, blues, and violets

Describe a cool color scheme?
~Gives an impression of calm; comforting; passiveness

Why is it important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
~Illusion of depth; meaning of color impacts all visual communications; important to know cultures; right color choice can convey the right message and evoke the desired response to any form of visual communication; color creates an emotion reaction
